Application of Multi-Criteria Decision Making Models in Designing Blasting Pattern of Gole-E-Gohar (mine # 1) Iron Mine

Abstract

Blasting operation play an important role on the downstream processes (i. e., loading, hauling and grinding) of the mining activities. The main objective of this operation is to achieve proper fragmentation and to maintain undesirable phenomena (e.g., fly rock and back break) at lowest possible level. There are several parameters including geometrical features of blasting pattern, rock mass characteristics and explosives' specification affecting blast design. Therefore, blast design is a multi -criteria problem and conventional methods are inaccurate. The application of multi-criteria decision making as an efficient method for attaining blasting operation objectives (proper fragmentation and fly rock- back break reduction) can be beneficial. In this research, Gole-E-Gohar (mine # 1) iron mine is considered as the case study and a database including 75 datasets has been collected. In the first step, using experts' judgment and Paired Comparison Analysis weights of the specified objectives were determined and then various collected blast design patterns were rated with the help of Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). In the next step, employing Goal Programming method, an attempt was made to improve blast objective by designing and modifying geometrical blast pattern. According to the obtained results, the rock fragmentation was improved by 16.86%, whereas fly rock and back break were reduced by 4.26% and 0.17, respectively.
