Determination of optimal conditions in column flotation of Masoud Abad Lorestan Talc Mine

Abstract

The aim of this research was to investigate the optimal conditions of Talc column flotation. In order to predict kind and amount of used chemicals, primary tests were performed in conventional (mechanical) flotation cell with optimal parameters from literature. Column flotation tests were performed to determine optimum parameters. Column flotation tests have been performed employing a column cell with diameter 9cm and height 200 cm. Mineralogical studies were done employing microscopic, XRD and XRF methods. Microscopic studies indicated that ore sample consists of high, medium and low grades. XRD showed that ore sample consists of talc, dolomite, calcite and quartzite. XRF indicated that the highest impurity is %6.35 CaO. Taguchi experiment design was used  with three input parameters of underflow rate, wash water rate and gas rate in three levels for each of them. Through these conditions, the  L9 array was offered by Qualitek-4 software. Optimum conditions have been obtained in 1 Lit /min, 0.8 Lit /min and 0.1 Lit /min for underflow, wash water and gas rates respectively. In optimum conditions, yield of Talc column flotation was 88.81% that shows approximately 20% increase in yield comparing to conventional flotation. Also whiteness measurements for feed, concentrate of optimum column flotation test and its replicate were found to be %92, %93.5 and %93.8 respectively, which indicates an increase of approximately %2 in sample whiteness
