Design of a data-based filter for separation of gravity anomalies

Abstract

In gravity studies, separation of surface structures from deep structures anomalies is one of the basic steps of gravity data processing. Effectiveness of different methods of interpreting gravity data is highly dependent on the results of anomalies separation. Several methods have been proposed for local and regional anomalies separation. In this paper, a data-based filter is designed to separate the longer from the shorter wavelength anomalies using average radial power spectrum. The filter is a low-pass filter which pass the low wavenumber of average radial power spectrum related to regional gravity anomalies. All programs used in this paper have been written in MATLAB. Results obtained on a synthetic dataset from a complex geologically model shows the efficiency of this method. The real gravity data have been acquired from Dolat Abad area for chromite deposit exploration. Separation results obtained from data-based filter show a good agreement with the results of the previous modeling.
